Spencertown Festival of Books Labor Day Weekend
Spencertown Academy Arts Center’s ninth annual Festival of Books, an extravaganza of all things literary, takes place over Labor Day weekend, August 30 through September 1. The Festival features a giant used book sale, two days of readings and book signings by nationally known and local authors and a children’s program. Featured authors include Marie Howe, Lauren Oliver, Jonathan Weiner, Deborah Heiligman, Alison Gaylin, Katia Lief and Wendy Corsi Staub. Admission is free to all of the events, except for the early book-buying opportunities. Spencertown Academy is located at 790 Route 203 in Spencertown, N.Y. For information on all the events, visit spencertownacademy.org, or call 518-392-3693.
The Festival, which began in 2006 as a modest book sale to raise funds for the Academy’s community art programs, has grown into one of the biggest and most eagerly anticipated cultural events of the year. Last year, nearly 2,000 people attended the event.
There are two early-buying events. Supporters of the Spencertown Academy Arts Center will have first crack at the books and enjoy wine, cheese, and shopping at the Members Preview Party on Friday, August 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $25 and memberships are available for purchase at the door. Shoppers and book dealers who want first pick of the stock can take advantage of an early-buying opportunity on Saturday, August 30, from 8 to 10 a.m. Admission for early buying on Saturday is $20. Serious bargain hunters will want to return to the sale on Monday, September 1, when all remaining sale books will be just $1, and all specialty books will be half price.
